Mit einer pompösen Feier, Hollywood-Flair und jeder Menge arabischer Elemente ist die umstrittene Fußball-WM in Katar eröffnet worden.

Vor den Augen von Katars Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Saudi-Arabiens Kronprinz Mohammed bin Salman und FIFA-Präsident Gianni Infantino, der zwischen den beiden Platz nahm, lieferten Oscar-Preisträger Morgan Freeman und etwa 800 Tänzer sowie Statisten aus aller Welt im Al-Bayt-Stadion in Al-Khor genau die spektakuläre Show, die sich der Weltverband auch von dieser WM verspricht.

Den Gesang unmittelbar vor dem Auftaktspiel Katars gegen Ecuador bot Junk Kook von der südkoreanischen Popgruppe BTS, der seinen Song Dreamers auf der wohl weltgrößten Bühne vorstellen durfte. Begleitet wurde er von dem katarischen Sänger Fahad Al-Kubaisi. Die FIFA hatte sich wohl zuvor auch um europäische Topstars bemüht, doch Dua Lipa winkte provisorisch ab, Rod Stewart erteilte den Machern ebenfalls eine Absage.

Beste Laune auf der Ehrentribüne

Die Gäste auf der Ehrentribüne neben Infantino hatten dennoch beste Laune. Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani signierte das älteste Nationaltrikot Katars und reichte es seinem Vater Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, anschließend sprach er zunächst auf Arabisch seine Begrüßungsworte und richtete dann um 17.09 Uhr Ortszeit ein "Welcome to the World" an die Fans. Infantino, der tags zuvor eine höchst skurrile Pressekonferenz gegeben hatte, genoss diesmal zunächst schweigend.

Unmittelbar vor Anpfiff begrüßte er die Fans zunächst auf Arabisch und Spanisch, dann richtete der FIFA-Boss sich auf Englisch an die Zuschauer. "Ein herzliches Willkommen an alle, wir sind hier, um den Fußball zu feiern", rief er in die Arena: "Fußball verbindet die Welt. Lasst die Show beginnen!"

Feuerwerk erleuchtet Doha

Zuvor hatte ein Feuerwerk den bereits dunklen Himmel in der Wüste nördlich von Doha erleuchtet. Das Al-Bayt ist eines von insgesamt nur acht WM-Stadien. Es ist eigens für die Endrunde aus dem Boden gestampft worden, bietet Platz für 60.000 Fans und ist einem Beduinen-Zelt nachempfunden. Die deutsche Mannschaft spielt hier gegen Spanien und Costa Rica.

Katar steht seit der von Korruptionsvorwürfen begleiteten Vergabe im Jahr 2010 aufgrund von Menschenrechtsverletzungen massiv in der Kritik. Nach der Verlegung des Turniers in den Winter rückten vor allem die Behandlung der Arbeitsmigranten sowie Berichte über Tausende Todesfälle in den Mittelpunkt. Dazu wird Katar wegen fehlender Rechte für Frauen und Personen der LGBTQ-Gemeinschaft kritisiert.
